BPE codes and the actions they trigger, the disease process, plaque and calculus control, interdental cleaning.
The periodontal half of prevention. Its centre is the BPE: what each code means, how it is recorded and interpreted, and — the part most often tested — what action each code actually requires. The single highest-value block in the certificate. The code is only useful because of the action attached to it.

- Recording rules, including how the mouth is divided and what is reported, are examined separately from interpretation.

The periodontal disease process
The biology behind the codes.
- Gingival inflammation and periodontal attachment loss are different stages with different reversibility, and questions rely on that difference.
- Plaque is the initiating factor; calculus contributes by making plaque control harder rather than by causing disease directly.
- Progression is not inevitable, which matters for how prevention is framed to a patient.
Plaque control, calculus and interdental cleaning
The practical half. Aids are matched to the space and to the patient, not recommended universally.
- Interdental cleaning aids each suit particular spaces and dexterity levels — the extended matching set is built on exactly this.
- Technique matters more than the choice of aid for most patients, and advice questions reflect that.
- Calculus removal is a clinical procedure; the educator role is about preventing its re-formation.
Risk factors
A short block, dominated by one factor.
- Smoking is the most heavily examined modifiable periodontal risk factor.
- Systemic conditions can modify periodontal risk, and questions ask you to recognise which patient is at raised risk.
