Fluoride and Varnish

The most numerical topic in the certificate, and the one where a near-miss is still wrong. It covers how fluoride prevents caries, toothpaste concentration and the amount to use at each age, fluoride varnish, fluoride mouthrinse, dental fluorosis and fluoride safety, and water and milk fluoridation. How fluoride works
The mechanism, briefly, because it explains why the vehicles differ.
- Fluoride acts principally at the tooth surface, which is why topical delivery matters more than total intake.
- It affects both demineralisation and remineralisation, which is why frequency of exposure is beneficial.
- Understanding the mechanism makes the age and risk banding of the recommendations follow logically.
Toothpaste: concentration and amount
The highest-yield block. Both variables — how strong, and how much — are banded by age and risk.
- Concentration recommendations are banded, and the bands are defined by age together with caries risk.
- The amount to use is separately specified and also varies by age; a question can test either variable alone.
- Advice on rinsing after brushing follows from the topical mechanism and is examined.
Varnish and mouthrinse
Professionally applied and self-applied topical vehicles, with different indications.
- Fluoride varnish has its own concentration, application frequency and indications by group.
- Fluoride mouthrinse is a separate vehicle with a separate concentration and a separate place in the recommendations.
- Extended matching questions pair a vehicle with its concentration — learn them as a table, not as isolated facts.
Fluorosis, safety and fluoridation
The upper end of the dose–response, and population-level delivery.
- Dental fluorosis relates to intake during tooth development, which is why advice on amount matters for young children.
- Water and milk fluoridation are population measures with different delivery and different considerations from individual advice.
- Safety questions concern ingestion rather than topical application; keep the two separate.
