Choosing and shielding the projection

Selection is a clinical decision with a dose consequence, and the two are examined together.

  • Different examinations answer different clinical questions; the assessment asks you to match the examination to what the operator is trying to find out.

  • Shielding practice has changed over time; work from current guidance rather than from what a practice has always done.

Intra-oral technique, holders and collimation

The everyday technique, and the equipment that makes it reproducible.

Panoramic technique and preparation

A short but reliably examined block. Most panoramic marks come from preparation, not from the exposure itself.

Dental CBCT

The largest single block in this topic. CBCT is a different modality with its own justification threshold, not a bigger radiograph.

  • CBCT carries its own justification requirements and its own referral criteria, distinct from those for conventional radiography.
  • The equipment, the field of view and the operator responsibilities all differ from intra-oral and panoramic work.
  • Because CBCT guidance is comparatively recent and still developing, verify anything you memorise against the current published document.

The examinable skill is matching the projection to the diagnostic need at the lowest reasonable dose. Give CBCT more revision time than its topic heading suggests — it carries a disproportionate share of the questions.
