Occupational hazards

Dental work carries a specific hazard profile, and most of it is controllable.

• Musculoskeletal strain from static posture is among the most common long-term occupational problems in dentistry.
• Noise, vibration, aerosols and chemical exposure each have their own controls.
• Eye protection matters for the operator and the patient, and for different reasons.

Inoculation injury and blood-borne viruses

The highest-stakes topic in the unit, and the one where a defined sequence of actions is expected.

• A sharps injury has an immediate first-aid response, then reporting, then risk assessment — in that order.
• Blood-borne viruses are the reason the response is urgent; the risk differs between viruses.
• Prevention beats response: safe sharps handling, never re-sheathing by hand, and immediate safe disposal.

Immunisation and occupational health

Protection that is arranged before the exposure rather than after it.

• Immunisation status is part of being fit to work in a clinical environment.
• Occupational health services assess fitness, advise on adjustments and manage post-exposure follow-up.

Personal well-being and knowing your limits

A professional theme rather than a clinical one, and increasingly prominent in the Standards.

• Stress and fatigue degrade clinical performance, which makes well-being a patient-safety issue.
• Recognising the limits of your own competence and saying so is professional behaviour, not weakness.
• Noticing that a colleague is struggling, and acting on it, is part of team responsibility.

In the exam The inoculation-injury sequence is the single most likely thing to be tested here, and order matters. Learn it as a sequence, not as a list.
